Your comment is awaiting moderation Dinosaur in the mario games Super Mario World was the first Nintendo game to introduce Mario's dinosaur companion, Yoshi, who assisted the plumber in rescuing Princess Toadstool from the clutches of Bowser and his minions. The 1990 SNES title is often considered one of the greatest games ever made and has cemented Yoshi as a mainstay character in the Super Mario universe. Despite Yoshi's beloved debut, the shell-eating dinosaur's original design was actually born out of necessity.

PBS’ Space Time has taken Super Mario World and Dinosaur Land apart, Mythbusters style, and come to the conclusion that the gravity on whichever planet the game is set on is not only impossible in our solar system, but also impossible in the known universe. One of the few launch titles of the SNES (and bundled with the system in North America and Europe), the fifth main game in the Super Mario series brings the Mario brothers into the mysterious Dinosaur Land. It marks the first appearance of Mario's dinosaur companions, known as Yoshi.

Right. So we thought that even if there were two players we could have the screen zooming out to accommodate them both. While making Super Mario World, we tested all kinds of ways of making the levels multiplayer, but the processing time required meant the system just wasn’t up to it. Then once we’d made it so Mario could ride Yoshi, we gave up on the idea of having a multiplayer mode. Another fifteen years went by and the Nintendo DS came out. So we thought: "This is it!" We now had two screens and we began to do tests in order to create a multiplayer mode which would allow players to appear together on the same level.
